Runescape Merchandise equals Social Suicide?

Is it?

I've seen this statement in several places (blogs and forums). Is it really so?
I personally would love to be able to buy and wear a Runescape T-Shirt, but it seems like the game is not being considered too cool by the younger (15-21 years old) generation.

Is it because they used to play it when they were 10-12 and now consider it childish? Or am I missing the point?
