I don't know about that one. I read the article when it came out, and I don't think the author has a good handle on the idea of junk. It's basic use is to increase the value in a trade.
For example when a god sword is worth 2mil more than the GE value on the street. Junk is used to make up that difference. It is fine to use gold bars or smithed stuff, but that does the opposite. You would have been better off selling the inputs and made money.
Yew long (u) are not proper junk. They can be fletched and alched profitably. That is not junk. A better example is buying up 9k vials for 60k and producing 550k value. Now you have effectively made a win win situation. You get your item for cheaper than it would have cost, and that 5k empty vials really is useless junk.
Brewing is another way to cheaply create junk. 3 minutes to make a mature chef's delight with a GE value of 130k. Maple longs also. They arent really profitable to alch, but they are great for junk trades, and u are increasing the value over that of the inputs.
That is the opposite of gold smithing or other smithing.

Turbo, thank you for the comment. I guess you are right on all points expect for the mature chef's delight one. Believe it or not, but I am able to sell mine on GE from time to time (both regular and mature one) :-)
You are kind of right about the beer. I can sell mine if I put it in mugs, but 4 mugs sell for less than a calquat keg, so I usually don't. I do agree that they sell, but I can't sell as much as I make.
I used it mostly to give an idea of what junk is. 2 buckets of water + barley + 4 choco dust + yeast is less than 1k, and the product is worth over 100k, and essentially worthless unless there is a quest that needs high cooking.
I know most of what there is to be said about trading in Runescape but the who idea of Junk Trading confuses me completely, I have had many people explain it, even J Rune of Smokin Mils and for the life of me cannot understand how paying 300k for something would automatically make it worth 1.2m if its listed price is set to 300k (purely as an example, maths is a very weak point with me)
I prefer simply to buy and sell through the GE lol

I love that you're all talking about Chef's Delight kegs, as that's been one of mine just recently too. I used to be able to sell it regularly, but recently it hasn't budged. Suddenly, two days ago, I can sell it again.
I asked Sparhawke about it and he said that the GE hates me. I knew it! LOL
Making beer is so much like Farming. Isn't it gratifying when you pour freshly made chef's delight with a touch of "that stuff" into a calquat keg (right from the tree)? How can I call it "junk"?
