Interesting comparison of death penalties in popular MMORPGs including Runescape. I am personally fine with the current system. Death is death after all and shouldn't be taken lightly by players. The impact of death was somewhat lessened by gravestones, but still the event is highly undesirable, which is good. In my opinion it does bring necessary element of thrill to the game.

I hate death in WoW, ok if you're a low level, training in an area full of level 3 monsters, the graveyard's never too far away. But when you get to a mid-range level, you'll die, and have to run/float halfway across the region to get to your corpse, only to die again. Most of the time I just resurrect myself and hearthstone to my home town.
On RuneScape, you die, you lose items. Okay, it's a pain, and I certainly wouldn't like losing the items I carry around with me. But it's a -lot- harder to die on RuneScape, and to be frank you'll have to either be AFK or doing something fairly stupid like running into a steel dragon without an anti-dragon shield to die instantly... and in those cases, you really deserve to lose something and you'll learn far quicker to not do it again.
